Celebrity Athlete News: Mike Lowell finishes baseball career with style

Baseball is a sport in which fame can be very fleeting. You're the hero one day, and a bum the next. It's a sport that has a "what have you done for me lately" mentality. However, every once in a while, a special player comes along that captures the hearts and minds of adoring fans. Celebrity athlete Mike Lowell was one such player.

Yesterday afternoon, in the last game of his career, Mike Lowell went out in style, stroking a single in his final at-bat as a member of the Boston Red Sox, signalling an end to his fabulous 13-year career.

Early on in his career, while a member of the Florida Marlins, Lowell experienced persistent pain in the area of his groin. After tests were performed, Mike Lowell was told that he was suffering from testicular cancer.

Celebrity athlete Lowell attacked the disease much in the same way he has attacked life: with a positive attitude and outlook.

He not only beat the cancer, he went on to use his celebrity athlete status to serve as an example to others.

Lowell never forgot what he went through, either with his cancer treatments or his difficult start in life. He became heavily involved in charity endeavors in South Florida, and founded the Mike Lowell Foundation, a non-profit charity designed to support low income families struggling with cancer. The foundation also supports youth baseball for inner-city children.

Mike Lowell quickly established himself as a leader and celebrity in Boston after being traded from the Marlins in 2006, both in the clubhouse and in the local community. His charity foundation quickly set up offices in Boston, and his efforts to help struggling families extended now to two different cities.

Last month, Mike Lowell announced his retirement from baseball, citing his ailing hips and the desire to finish his career in a city that he loved playing for. The accolades quickly began pouring in, and Lowell's charity achievements and humanitarian efforts were singled out.

As good of a career as celebrity athlete Mike Lowell was able to achieve, it was his charity activities and selfless dedication to community that will long endear him in the minds of fans in both Boston and South Florida.

While charity giving and humanitarian efforts may seem like an obligation to many celebrity athletes, Mike Lowell is the exception, as he continually gives back to his community in a selfless manner. Simply because he wants to.
