I will begin this recap of "The Celebrity Apprentice" with a plea -- Mr. Trump, will you please spare everyone on Rock Solid? Sharon Osbourne and Bret Michaels gave us the "tour bus thrust" last week, and I would absolutely hate it if I went without their comedy next week. (Sure, Holly Robinson Peete is probably better at doing much of her job, but I don't want to watch someone "do a job.")
This week, the job was actually pretty simple in that teams had to come up with three radio commercials for three unique blue-collar services -- electricity, plumbing, and air conditioning. Bret Michaels decided to step up for Rock Solid as the Project Manager, while Summer Sanders stood up for Tenacity.
It didn't take long for Bret and company to start up the fart jokes when talking about plumbers, and then even laugh when one of the executives said that the workers are the "butt" of many jokes (rim shot). Early on in the challenge, it wasn't really clear if the gang got much of anything accomplished. Bret tried to sabotage the other team, but it really didn't have that much of an impact.
On Tenacity, it was business as usual. Summer and Holly acted as serious as all-get-out, and it makes me want Cyndi Lauper on the other team even more. Curtis Stone was easily the weakest link, since he was dealing with both a difference in dialect and the fact that he has no musical knowledge whatsoever.
However, it is really starting to annoy me how condescending Summer and Holly are acting towards Cyndi. Ladies, you're dealing with a multi-platinum artist here! The whole team disagreed about the ad -- Curtis thought it was too much information, and Summer just wanted more information spoken faster. Curtis also wanted the ad to be a bit more creative.
Then, we had the arrival of Donald's "eyes and ears" -- Ivanka and some young fella who just happens to be Trump's third child Eric. With team Rock Solid, it was obvious they may be taking a questionable risk by putting the word "crack" into an ad about plumbing, especially when the executives specifically asked that they be at least reasonably nice to plumbers. With Tenacity, they were running the risk of being extremely boring in a market already full of boring commercials. (It was so dull that Cyndi even made a joke about her biggest hit "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.")
The biggest problem for Cyndi moving forward was her voice. She was starting to suffer from laryngitis, but the (smart) decision was made in the end to let her sing. Why would you not let Cyndi Lauper sing when she's one of the biggest stars on the planet?
The two extremes were clearly evident when it came time for the live performances. Rock Solid was colorful and fun, whereas Tenacity was strictly business. The executives didn't love Bret's crack joke, but it seemed the originality was more there in his ad.
Now, we head off to the boardroom. We heard about the executives hating plumber jokes and that Tenacity was boring. In the end, though, the executives ultimately sided with Rock Solid. Bret Michaels is really tearing things up as a Project Manager on this show, and he won another $40,000 for his charity.
Immediately, it seemed obvious to me that Summer had to go. I actually am a fan of hers (thanks mostly to "Figure It Out"), but she made the decision to make the ad a total snoozefest. Sharon and Maria Kanellis may not like Curtis, but he really didn't do anything wrong and even told Summer to make it more exciting.
The Olympic swimmer made her first bonehead move of the night in picking Cyndi to stay in the boardroom instead of Holly, who wasn't exactly spectacular in the task. She then failed to yet again answer Trump's question about who to fire, and the choice really came between herself and Curtis. In the end, though, my prediction ended up being correct -- even if it was trickier than I imagined.
