Other singers and celebrities rushed to Beyonce's side on Wednesday, in the wake of reports that she lip-synced "The Star-Spangled Banner" (embedded) during President Barack Obama's second inaugural ceremony.
It's still an allegation, as Beyonce herself has not come forth with a confirmation, but a spokesperson for the Marine Corps Band said:
We don't know why Beyonce decided to use prerecorded music. All music [for inaugural ceremonies] is prerecorded as a matter of course, and that's something we've done for years and years. The Marine Band did perform live throughout the ceremony, but we received last-minute word that Beyonce wanted to use the recording.
Whether or not it was lip-synced, it was still beautiful. Beyonce was seen pulling out her earpiece, which could have been used to time her lip movements to the music.
In response to the accusations, she received a lot of support. Former “American Idol” judge Steven Tyler said it really didn't matter whether or not Beyonce sang live because either way, it was Beyonce.
Beyonce's so hot she can do anything. Let's just get real.
Michelle Williams, member of the newly reunited Destiny's Child with Beyonce, said:
I will say this, it's not the first or the last time that someone has had to lip-sync ... my greatest singer of all time, Whitney Houston, it came to light that her anthem was in fact lip-synced.
It's their personal preference. With big crowds and echoes, you know when it's a big historical moment, you don't want any room for any mistakes so I can understand why it was done.
Jennifer Lopez said:
Sometimes it happens when you are in certain stadiums and certain venues and things, they do pre-record stuff because you're going to have that terrible slapback.
Katy Perry added simply:
She didn't lip sync.
Aretha Franklin, the so-called the queen of soul and a past inaugural performer, said she laughed when she heard Beyonce hadn’t sung live.
I thought it was funny because the weather down there was about 46 or 44 degrees and for most singers that is just not good singing weather... When I heard that I just really cracked up. I thought it was really funny, but she did a beautiful job with the pre-record.
In a humorous note, the perpetrator of one of history's greatest known lip-syncing scandals, Fab Morvan of Milli Vanilli:
Everyone knows Beyonce can sing. Everyone should just step back and relax. There are far more important things to worry about. But I can certainly relate to what she's going through.
