The Rose Parade is one of the few parades where celebrities, whether local or international, do not rule the day. The Grand Marshal is usually someone who is well-known, the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame inductees are famous to a certain interest group, and float sponsors sometimes put a celebrity or two onboard. But the rest—the Mayor of Pasadena, the Tournament of Roses president, and the Queen and Court are local folks in what is still a hometown parade.

We’ve pulled together some photos of these lesser-known but beloved icons of the 2014 Rose Parade. Besides Mayor Bill Bogaard, who brought along a caravan of historic fire trucks to the 125th Rose Parade, and Hall of Famers Lynn Swan, Lloyd H. Carr and Orlando Pace, there are the motorcycle cops of the Pasadena Police Department, who clear the route and do some fancy riding along the way and of course the famous Thunderbirds whose pilots we may not know but whose flying we appreciate.
