Numerous big name Hollywood celebrities have placed their names on a letter that was sent to President Barack Obama by the Sierra Club, the contents of which were published in a full-page ad in a Washington, D.C. newspaper.
Included among the letter’s star signatories were Alec Baldwin, Susan Sarandon, Woody Harrelson, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Edward Norton, Adam Levine, and Morgan Freeman.
Hollywood celebs were instrumental in assisting Obama’s 2012 campaign and his pursuit of a second presidential term.
Embodied in the letter is a message to the president, which encourages him to seek an extreme approach to energy policy that includes a “phase out” of fossil fuels in America.
“Your legacy as 44th president of the United States rests firmly on your leadership on climate disruption,” the letter indicated. “Only the president has the power to lead an effort on the scale and with the urgency we need to phase out fossil fuels and lead America, and the world, in a clean energy revolution.”
The Sierra Club published the letter to the president on Monday in a full-page ad that was placed in The Hill newspaper. The appearance of the ad precedes a scheduled demonstration on February 17 called ForwardOnClimate, which is being co-sponsored by 350.org and the Hip Hop Caucus.
ForwardOnClimate organizers are attempting to stage the largest global warming event ever to be held.
Of significance is the fact that for the first time since the group’s inception more than a century ago the Sierra Club board has approved the strategy of civil disobedience to achieve its objectives.
“For civil disobedience to be justified, something must be so wrong that it compels the strongest defensible protest,” Michael Brune, Sierra Club executive director, indicated in a statement. “We are watching a global crisis unfold before our eyes, and to stand aside and let it happen — even though we know how to stop it — would be unconscionable. As the president said in his inaugural address, ‘to do so would betray our children and future generations.’”
