Mark your calendars and plan to join the fun at the 2010 Celebration of Gourds presented by The New Mexico Gourd Society.
On Saturday February 27, 2010 from 8:30am to 5:00pm and Sunday February 28, 2010 from 9:00am to 5:00pm, The New Mexico Gourd Society is holding their 5th Annual Celebration of Gourds. The New Mexico Gourd Society strives to promote and bring awareness to horticulture as well as an appreciation for gourds, gourd growing and gourd arts and crafts. Much information is provided through meetings, printed material, media, festivals, shows, and various other channels.
Gourds are a natural resource grown in a variety of sizes, shapes, and thickness and has existed for thousands of years spanning the entire globe. Early man decorated gourds by cutting and scraping images using the sharp edge of a hot stick. This method is still used in some South American countries. Many cultures throughout time have used and still use gourds for bowls, vessels, hats, musical instruments, and art just to name a few.
The 2010 annual celebration is being held at the New Mexico State Fairgrounds located in Albuquerque, NM and featuring well-known gourd artist, Robert Rivera. The gourd festival will be drawing crowds from many locations who will enjoy the many exhibitions, competitions, the gourd history booth, food, entertainment, door prizes, raffles, and more. Over 12,000 people attended the 2009 Gourd festival and this year promises to bring out even more.
