Celebration of Craftswomen at Fort Mason

This is the 31st year of the Celebration of Craftswomen, the largest juried women’s crafts fair in the country. A benefit for The Women’s Building, it used to be held there, but now with more than 200 artists including glass blowers, painters, jewelry makers, and sculptors, it is at the Herbst Pavilion at Fort Mason.

San Francisco-based ceramicist Eileen Goldenberg has been going to the event for about 20 years. She says it’s her favorite of the many crafts fairs she goes to.

“Some people come every year, so I get to see a lot of my customers and collectors,” she said. “I walk around a little and see what people are doing. It’s a great community. We’re like a tribe of artists.”

It’s unusual to have a fair like this just for women, and Goldenberg appreciates that.

“I do painting so I’m in the gallery world,” she said. “The statistics are that in art schools it’s 80 percent women and in the galleries it’s 80 percent men. People think we don’t need feminism anymore, but we do.”

Goldenberg assists the jury in picking artists for the show. One of those artists is Liz Russell, who makes functional ceramics such as teapots, plates and bowls. She has been coming down from Forestville for 3 years for the event.

“It’s got a good vibe,” she said. “It kind of feels like family.”

Since the show is about more than just selling some jewelry, there’s a different atmosphere, Russell says.

“It seems to me that the people there have been going since it started and aren’t just going to get Christmas presents,” she said. “They’re trying to support women.”

The show gives people a chance to put their money where their politics are, says Christie Ward, one of the producers of the show. Plus, where else can you pick up a recycled cashmere sweater and some mixed media collages?

“There’s something special about buying something from the person that made it,” Ward said. “It’s not like buying a sweater at Macy’s. It has personality, a story.”

Celebration of Craftswomen is November 28-29 and December 5-6 from 10 am to 5 pm at Herbst Pavillion at Fort Mason. Admission is $8.50 for adults and $6.50 for seniors, students and the disabled. Children 12 and under are free.

I have seen Ms russells pottery up close and their is nothing like it. The uniqueness of each piece coupled with the obvious skill and care put into the creation of each is really amazing. We have several plates and bowls, they are all very strong and our kids favorite bowls were made by www, rhoneypots, com

(A squirrel eating a nut bowl and a kitten bowl.)

Really, take the time to look at her craftswomanship, you will be thankful that you did even if just to see real plates and bowls for once.

Just went to the fair and saw her stuff. Lots of octopus. Very nice and fun. Peacocks too.
