The citizens of Milwaukee should be informed that today (Sunday, Nov.14, 2010) is the first day of official celebration of the World Diabetes Day, not only nationally but also internationally. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) is more than proud to announce the official memorandum on the World Diabetes Day, as the first major resolution of an ambitious campaign. Their goal is to reach over one billion people around the Globe with awareness message. (Source, WDD)

Diabetes mellitus is recognized as the 7th leading cause of death among Americans and cases of this disease are still growing at an alarming rate. Actually, diabetes is converting in the most modern, despite silent 21st century epidemic. Currently over 10 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes, while another 5 million are considered "pre-diabetic." It is more than obvious that there is a need to officially acknowledge how dangerous diabetes is becoming, knowingly that every ten seconds someone dies from diabetes or its related causes. Despite of the tragic statistics, there is a way to prevent the onset of this disease, in its different forms and stages with proper awareness, diet and exercise. If you wish to obtain deeper knowledge on the disease, please follow the link Metabolic Syndrome Examiner.

Here is a message from the President of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), Professor Jean Claude Mbanya: "People from all corners of the world will literally bring diabetes to light on 14 November. No matter where you are, it is your efforts that make World Diabetes Day a truly global success. On 20 December, 2006 the United Nations General Assembly passed a landmark Resolution 61/ 225, recognizing diabetes as "chronic, debilitating and costly disease, associated with major complications and severe risks for families, countries and the entire world." (Source, Diabetes Federation)

The World Diabetes Day is in fact the first day a time when a “non-infectious” or “non-contagious” disease has been recognized in such a major way. The goal of IDF l is to help spreading a message on how serious the disease is becoming with awareness on diabetes prevention and care. The General Assembly of the United Nations passed a landmark resolution recognizing diabetes as a chronic, debilitating and costly disease and designated 14th November – as the World Diabetes Day.

The diabetes mellitus epidemic is becoming a serious problem. 21st century is actually converting in the century of two major epidemics- obesity and diabetes (both recognized as metabolic syndrome outcomes). According to official statistics the prevalence of diabetes is spreading quickly and more and more people will be touched by the problem, if not directly then through friends and family members. Over 250 million people (or roughly 6% of the world’s adult population) now have diabetes worldwide, a figure that is ready to escalate to 380 million in the next 15 years, if action s are not taken. Sending a message is to create awareness not only in your city but between those visiting it. If you question the reasoning behind this celebration you should know that as the prevalence of diabetes spreads, more and more people will be touched by the problem. Participants in the celebration should wear blue and form a human circle at the gathering. Healthy food samples, diet books, music and dancing will take place at the event. If you are questioning the reason behind this major event, in case you or your family are not suffering from diabetes, some of your neighbors may suffer or a neighbor's child with diabetes diagnosis. In case you are not prepared to take an active part, you may simply light a blue candle in the privacy of your own home, or to dress in blue for your family and friends.

You may also play your part in raising awareness of diabetes and its complications.
