Celebrating the Winter Solstice Druid style!

Anyone reading this article not familiar with metropolitan Atlanta will not know that we have a city called Druid Hills in the eastern part of Atlanta, inside of the Perimeter, which is enclosed by the circle of the 285 freeway.

So, for Atlanta locals, I’m doing this piece on Druid style to show how the Druids in the British Isles celebrated the first sunrise after the Winter Solstice of December 21 and in particular what they wore…

Some of the Druids, in particular the priests, who took part in the ceremony and attended the Winter Solstice ceremony at Stonehenge wore their long white flowing robes, adorned with Celtic and Druid symbols.

There was a King Arthur and a Merlin as well, complete with a Celtic sword.  Another participant, a mature lady with braided flaxen hair, donned red robes and red flowers in her hair.

A drummer was dressed in dearskins, with dear horns atop his head, as a young woman with shaven head – who reminded me of Sinead O’Connor – danced in her flowing white dress.

Very curiously a man with warpaint type markings on his face, donning beaded necklaces (like a Native American?) and a blue and white shawl (which looked very Jewish like one a Rabbi would wear perhaps?), blew a long tubular horn, much like a didgeridoo of the Australian Aboriginals.

This year’s Winter Solstice festivities were accompanied by unusually warm weather, which also drew a larger than normal crowd to Stonehenge, as they celebrated the sunrise closest to the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year.

Enjoy the slideshow of the first sunrise after the Winter Solstice at Stonehenge in Wiltshire, UK!
