Programs and activities celebrating Dr. King's birthday are held throughout Chicagoland, on the official MLK holiday. If he were living, the slain civil rights leader would have celebrated his 83th birthday, on yesterday, Jan. 15.
Many unadvertised celebrations are at historically African American churches, similar to the one where Dr. King preached his first sermon. Others are at museums and the Symphony Center.
Homeschoolers can study Dr. King's life in depth at any time. Why limit the study of this great American's life to one day?
The following events/programs can be a springboard for further research and discussion:
King Day Celebration, DuSable Musuem of African American History, 10 a.m.-7 p.m., Jan. 16, $10, $8 for members
The Journey, the Dream; MLK Tribute Concert, Symphony Center Orchestra Hall, downtown Chicago, 7:30 p.m., Jan. 16, $26-$96, Students $10
