So maybe you don’t own a yacht upon which you bask in the Mediterranean Sun. You probably don’t look out of your kitchen window and see rolling hills of orchards and olive trees. We may not be in the Mediterranean but we can definitely celebrate National Mediterranean Diet Month.
Oldways is a non-profit educational foundation that is dedicated to reviving the healthful pleasures of real food. They feel that most of the “new ways” food we consume is lacking in substance. Their mission is to promote fresh, simple, and delicious food.
This year’s campaign focuses on educating the American public on the essentials of the Mediterranean diet. They are committed to delivering a Million Mediterranean Diet Pyramids to American households in 2011. Here are a few suggestions of Oldways and the Mediterranean Food Alliance on how we can celebrate Mediterranean Diet Month.
1. Get your brochures: Their 2011 brochure connects their pyramid to 8 simple steps for healthier eating. You can order just one for yourself but they support you ordering more to spread the word to your friends, family or organization.
2. Hang The Pyramid: Oldways has recently made updates to their Mediterranean Diet Pyramid. This can be a great tool for those that may be trying to embrace and incorporate the Mediterranean Diet within their daily eating. You can order this pyramid as a poster or print it as an 8x11 document.
One thing unique about this Pyramid is that the base doesn’t contain food! The anchor of a Mediterranean Diet includes physical activity and enjoying meals with others. I think that is something we can all embrace!
3. A Tip A Day: Oldways has devised a 31 day calendar with tips to carry us throughout the month of May. May is coming to an end but these tips can be useful and insightful beyond this month. It is the hope of Oldways and The Mediterranean Food Alliance that the celebration of Mediterranean Diet Month will be a catalyst, assisting individuals incorporate this diet into everyday life.
4. Eat your Veggies! Vegetables are a staple in the Mediterranean Diet. Oldways has gotten together with their food alliance to feature some great recipes!
5. Discover the Mediterranean Diet in America: In 2010, Dietary Guidelines for Americans validated the Mediterranean Diet. This is one of the reasons that aspects of this diet are now being incorporated into Americans foodways. View the national map and see who is studying components of this diet right in our backyard.
Let’s celebrate Mediterranean Diet Month locally by shopping and dining with places that will help us incorporate this diet into our eating.
