With the weather promising to cooperate all weekend and into the week, and with the brainchild of Danielle Landes gaining more and more diverse by the year, World Wide Knit in Public Day has become the summer event for knitters to get out there and show the world what crafting is all about. Events are being held all over the world from June 14 to June 22 this year.
Founded in 2005, World Wide Knit in Public Day has now expanded into a weeklong event, the largest knitter-run event in the world with events held in countries from Australia to Europe. Chicago has several events taking place in the area, so grab your project bag and a chair to join several other knitters in forming a public crafting community for all the world to see:
Berwyn Public Library: The Berwyn Public Library, located at the corner of Riverside Drive and Harlem Avenue in Berwyn, will be hosting yarn crafters on their lawn beginning at 10:00a.m. on June 21. Their event will include a spinning and dyeing demonstration, and possibly a petting zoo as well.
Cultured Purls of McHenry County: The knitting guild will be gathering at the Gazebo of Depot Park in Crystal Lake on Saturday, June 14 from 8:00a.m. to 1:00p.m. The group is also collecting charity knits at the event, so you may knit them while on location, bring them to donate, or get more information to donate at a later date if desired. The guild will also collect squares and strips to yarn-bomb the gazebo for the day.
Hillside Public Library: The Mixed Stitchers of the Hillside Public Library will be hosting a Knit-in-Public event at their location from 10:00a.m. to 3:00p.m. on Saturday, June 21. Knitting will take place on the front lawn, and a table will be provided for people who want to display their finished wares for the public as well.
Lansing Public Library: Meeting on the lawn of the library and beginning at 9:30a.m. on Wednesday, June 18, this knitting-exclusive event will face downtown Lansing on the corner of School Street and Indiana Avenue. There is no end-time, so knitters may come and go as they please and bring snacks if they plan on staying for the day.
Knoutside Knitters: Join Kathy and her crew as she gathers knitters, crocheters, and spinners to the Dandelion Fountain on Naperville's historic Riverwalk from 1:30p.m. to 3:30p.m. on Sunday, June 22. The area is directly across from the Jackson entrance to the library, and is open to all yarn crafters.
Millenium Park Stitch in Public Day: On the north end of Millenium Park in the Boeing Gallery area, this years-long tradition of knitters meeting for Knit-in-Public Day at this location will continue this year by starting at 11:00a.m. The event will wrap at 4:00p.m., with many knitters historically continuing their time together by taking in a restaurant in the area. The event is co-hosted by YarnCon founder Natalia Wilson.
Mischievous Knitters: Libertyville coffee and tea shop Mischief's will be hosting an event on Wednesday, June 18 from 5:30p.m. to 8:30p.m. The pub is located next to the Libertyville Metra station and offers plenty of seating if a yarn crafter cannot provide his or her own.
Mosaic Yarn Studio: This local yarn shop in downtown Mount Prospect will be hosting an event on both Saturdays, June 14 and June 21, from 10:00a.m. to 2:00p.m. Iced tea will be provided, so all yarn crafters will need to bring is a lawn chair and their project. The shop is located near the Mount Prospect Metra stop, and there are ample food choices in the area if bringing lunch is not the preferred option.
The Nook: This Lisle yarn and candy store will be hosting a Knit-in-Public event from 4:00p.m. to 7:00p.m. on Saturday, June 14. Located in the heart of downtown Lisle, knitters will have plenty of dinner options nightlife choices to make a day of the trip. The store is also situated closely to the Metra Lisle stop on the Burlington Northern line, offering an easy commute for people coming from Chicago.
Sifu Design Studio: On Sunday, June 15, from 10:00a.m. to 6:00p.m., customers of Sifu Design Studio will be knitting and chatting up the passersby in front of the store, located at 6054 N Broadway in the Edgewater neighborhood of Chicago. The sidewalk space in front of the store is ample, and Lickety Split Custard will be open next door to help quench the sweet tooth of every knitter at the event.
If you are out and about for the coming week, join a knitting community in the area and get your yarn on for World Wide Knit in Public Day. Questions from strangers are met with enthusiasm, and new crafters are born every day from interest being piqued by watching knitting happen in a public place.
