If you're sick of stuffed teddy bears, boxes of chocolates, and boring expensive dinners, and you want to celebrate Valentine's Day in a slightly more nontraditional way, why not do it Tarantino-style?
At the Hollywood Theater in northeast Portland tonight, there will be a screening of the 1993 classic Tarantino film "True Romance," presented by Fleur de Lethal Cinematheque. This is not simply a mere run-of-the-mill 'movie night' though- everyone is encouraged to dress as their favorite character from the film, and movie tickets, tattoos, and prizes will be given away. Also, there will be bottles of champagne and chocolate-dipped strawberries for those who purchase the VIP package (See bottom of the page for details).
Those who are familiar with Quentin Tarantino's work will know that there is nothing 'traditionally' romantic about the love story in "True Romance." But, that's what makes it great. Christian Slater plays Clarence Worley, a lonely guy who ends up falling for the prostitute his boss secretly hires to keep him company on his birthday. The prostitute, Alabama Whitman (Patricia Arquette), has only been a hooker for four days, but she already wants out because she's fallen for Clarence as well. The two immediately get married, kill her evil pimp, Drexl (Gary Oldman), steal all his coke, and embark on a road trip while being pursued by a band of gangsters.

"True Romance" was written by Quentin Tarantino and directed by Tony Scott ("The Last Boy Scout,""Top Gun"), and was released right between "Reservoir Dogs" and "Pulp Fiction" in 1993. In true Tarantino fashion, "True Romance" has an impressively long list of stars to its name, including Dennis Hopper, Christopher Walken, Brad Pitt, James Gandolfini, Val Kilmer, Samuel L. Jackon, and Michael Rapaport.

"True Romance" provides a bevy of notorious scenes that make it a cult favorite, most notably the crazy showdown between Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper, and pretty much every scene that contains 'Floyd,' Brad Pitt's turn as a huge pothead. Floyd is often cited by many as their favorite Pitt characer.
So skip the Hallmark cards and take your valentine down to the Hollywood Theater to enjoy a night of crazy gun fights, bloody encounters, and true love. Show starts at 8:30 pm.
But, a necessary word of caution- if you and your significant other are not fans of gratuitous violence and Tarantino films in general, then this is not the movie for you. Stick with Channing Tatum's "The Vow."
