On February 7, 1812; an English novelist was born. Of course, it would be several years before his hands would actually pen his first words for the world to realize the brilliance behind his words.
Charles Dickens was not born in America, but he did visit the USA. As part of one of his journeys, he made a stop in the St. Louis area.
While traveling through the area, he stayed in Lebanon, Illinois, at the Mermaid House. This was an inn built in 1830 by Lyman Adams. Adams was a retired sea captain. According to The Charles Dickens Page, Charles Dickens wrote of his visit in his American Notes by saying:
In point of cleanliness and comfort it would have suffered by no comparison with any village alehouse, of a homely kind, in England.
Dickens is best known for works such as A Christmas Carole, Tale of Two Cities or Oliver Twist.
