The Fremont Fair kicks off summer with the Solstice Parade - an “annual celebration of life and art.” The 21st Annual Solstice Parade travels through Fremont and begins at noon on Saturday, June 20, 2009.
There are only three official rules for parade participation: "(1) no printed words or logos, (2) no motor vehicles (except wheelchairs) and (3) no animals (except aid animals)." Anything else can and does go, and if I had to sum up the Parade in three quick words, they would be “festive,” “fun,” and “colorful.” Many of the participants put hours of thought and work into their costumes and/or pieces, and their displays of fantastic (and fantastical) creativity bring smiles to the faces of many.
The Parade route starts on North 36th Street at Leary Way, goes through downtown Fremont, and ends up at Gasworks Park and the Solstice Celebration (12:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.) featuring music, food, and drinks (including a beer garden).
The Solstice Parade can draw quite a crowd to the smallish Fremont community, so come early, bring your patience, and take public transportation if possible. Otherwise be prepared to spend some time finding legitimate parking and doing some walking.
(The “naked” Painted Cyclists ride before the parade at some un-appointed time after 11:00 a.m.)
After the Parade, be sure to stay for the fabulous Fremont Fair, which takes place both Saturday and Sunday. Directions to the Fair and a map of the parade route can be found at www.fremontfair.org/getting-here. More information can be obtained via the links provided below, or by emailing info@fremontfair.org or calling 206.297.6801. The Solstice Parade is presented by the Fremont Arts Council (206.547.7440).
