It’s the ho ho help animals celebrate time of the year. Many animal advocacy organizations, shelters and groups have pet activities and events coming up that give animal lovers the opportunity to share their love of four footed friends. Here are some:
Mohawk Hudson Humane Society offers Pet photos with Santa at Community Resources Federal Credit Union, 20 Wade Rd, Latham on Saturday, December 7 from noon to 3p.m. If Fido and Fluffy love dressing up, or you just want a 2 and 4 footed family portrait, his event is for you. Make sure pets are leashed or in carriers and remember that many pets do not like the restraining feel of costumes and head gear. Their normally placid personalities can become suddenly aggressive, especially around unfamiliar animals.
MHHS is participating in two adoption clinics on December 7, too. They will be at the Petco Albany Adoption Clinic, 1440 Central Ave. in Albany and at the Sears Home Appliance Showroom, 54 Crossing Blvd, Clifton Park from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. for cat and dog adoptions and information.
Christmas is the perfect time to welcome a new furry friend into your life and give a needy pet a forever home. Be sure to talk with the staff at the adoption clinics to help match you with the right pet. An older lap cat may be a better fit than a frisky kitten for many people. Adult cat adoptions are often low or free and they make wonderful, lower maintenance companions.
The Animal Protective Foundation of Scotia is raffling off a car. You can win a brand new, 2014 Subaru Impreza 4-door sedan from Capitaland Motors. Just 500 tickets will be sold. Tickets are $50 each and may be purchased at the shelter or by calling 518-374-3944, ext. 114. The drawing will be held on December 20, 2013. The model, transmission, and color will be determined at time of drawing. Winner assumes and must pay all fees and charges, including tax, licensing fee, and any options the winner chooses. Purchasers must be at least 18 years of age, and need not be present at drawing to win. You can send a request for a copy of the complete rules to email@example.com.
Check out some great information and opportunities to get involved with animal advocacy on the APF website. You can sign a petition to help strengthen Buster’s Law, research volunteer opportunities and trainings, become a foster pet parent (especially through the Pet Guardian Program for women affected by domestic violence), and much more.

If you are looking for the perfect gift for the hard to please person, make a contribution in that person’s name to one of these great animal advocacy groups, or one where you live. There are also many national groups such as the ASPCA, Humane Society of the US, and others.
