So this year for my birthday, I’ve thus far got some great gifts….with all of the amazing, luxurious things…. there was still a huge place that felt empty in my heart… and I realized that I wanted to give myself the only gift that can truly fill us… the gift of giving, the gift of love.
Lately I’ve been thinking about all of the ABUNDANT things that we are blessed with here… the rows of glimmering candy packages containing multiple sorts of ooey gooey goodness, the millions of glass, plastic, & aluminum bottles full of all the liquids of our choosing just lining shelves…. Water fountains even, in the public parks, gas stations, and restaurants just offering it up, for free even, if you bring your own bottle, many restaurants such as Starbucks, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, etc. will fill it up with aqua.
For many out there… tonight even, they are not that lucky. In places around the world right now, children, adults, men woman, elders, animals…do not have access to clean drinking water, let alone a variety of choices. Water is life. We have to all start to really think about the way we treat our resources here on planet earth in general, so that we and I pray, never run out of clean drinking water, everywhere.
In the mean time, what baffles me is the contrast – the many and millions of waste on the one hand, and the total lack on the other, and the idea that this is just not our problem? We are one, here sharing one planet and what effects one, effects us all. So, for me, I am so grateful to my life that has showed up in its many contrasts, I am grateful for my mother who took me to the soup kitchen as a child and the free child care center where we would volunteer, I am happy for my experiences as an adult in San Diego, and Los Angeles having daily encounters with the local homeless there, and for my heart being opened wide enough through this life to know that until ALL of my brothers and sisters are fed, I am never truly full. Not until we care for ALL of our little children friends do I think that we understand what the TRUE meaning of life is.
Great things are nice. And I recommend them…. For everyone! I’m about inspiring us to live our greatest lives, enjoying decadence, sharing often, but remember where true value comes from. I believe there is a balance between mass consumerism and asceticism. I believe that it’s ok to give to other people from your heart to bring them happiness, but to remember to share that purpose, and to truly use this season to not just look outward, but also look inward, to find what truly matters to us, and perhaps unlock a little of that Christmas magic but sharing with amazing people and amazing causes doing great work every single day. It’s like Scrooge who realized that to give is really to receive.
Here are some causes you can donate to , perhaps even in lieu of a gift for someone….in honor of them really, what would be better? I know that it’s a gift I would love.
