If you find yourself identifying with Captain Jack Sparrow when he laments, “But why is all the rum gone?” then today is the day for you. August 16th is National Rum Day, an opportunity tailor-made to celebrate all things rum.

Rum has a long and noble history dating back centuries. It helped the British Navy rule the seas and helped a collection of rag-tag colonials build a new nation. (Yes, that would be the United States.) And of course, there’s a wonderful range of cocktails that feature rum, from the deliciously simply Daiquiri to the lovable complexity of Tiki drinks.

But if you’re looking for something other than a warming punch or a sweet tropical delight, perhaps it’s time to substitute rum for the spirits in another classic cocktail. There are easily dozens of cocktails to try, but naturally, TheBeerLady has something specific in mind – a delicious twist on the classic Bloody Mary, made with Sailor Jerry Rum.

Some are surprised to learn that Sailor Jerry is named for a real person, Norman Keith Collins. Not surprisingly, Collins was a sailor from his teens, something that contributed to his nickname. His greatest claim to fame, however, was as a talented tattoo artist. With a style described as a “union of the roguish attitude of the American sailor with the mysticism and technical prowess of the Far East,” Collins has had a lasting influence.

The rum named for Sailor Jerry has also become a classic. It’s an old-school spiced rum, warm with cinnamon and nutmeg with smooth, rich vanilla. The Bloody Jerry might become your new favorite drink.

Bloody Jerry

  • 1 1/2 oz. Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum
  • 2 dashes hot sauce
  • 3 dashes Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 heavy-handed dash of steak seasoning spices
  • 1 teaspoon of wet minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon of spicy bean or pickle juice
  • Fill with plain tomato juice

Pour it all in a pint glass, squeeze in some lemon and lime wedges, toss ‘em in. Add ice.
Shake like hell. Garnish with whatever the hell you want.

Now, the towering garnish pictured may or may not be your style, but perhaps you have a bit of the pirate in you. If you decide to go for it, post your photos on Twitter and Instagram @SailorJerry with the hashtag #ScrewTheCelery. Your photo could win you a DIY Bloody Jerry brunch for 10. How’s that for a celebration?
