Christmas has become about Black Friday and gift exchanges. Children have an expectation to receive their desired presents, so accomodating parents and the overgrown children themselves get in long lines to get the new Xbox or Air Jordans.
Some people go to the extremes of cutting in line or pepper spraying the competition. I am sure Jesus is proud of how we, as a supposedly Christian nation, are celebrating His birth.
We all want to exchange gifts, and we all want them to be met with the best reaction. During tough times, there are many of us who just want to be able to give something to those we love.
But there are families who just want to give food to those they are taking care of. That is where the real Christian steps in.
Shiloh Church is holding its annual Christmas dinner a little late this year because it falls on a Sunday and must follow the services. But if you live near the Dimond District of Oakland or it is worth a drive for you, stop by 3295 School Street and have dinner on us.
There will be friendly Shiloh volunteers ready to pray for you if you request it and serve you from the greeting at the door through the dinner, gifts for the children and clothes for everyone. All of it is not only free to all people and all faiths, but also free of charge.
Better yet, if you want to be part of the extensive team that honouring the Lord by serving the community as He did. Volunteers can always be used—just let someone know at one of the day's three English (8am, 10am, noon) or one Spanish service (2pm)!
