Are you looking for ways to celebrate the National Education Association’s Read Across America Day in Columbus? The national day of reading is celebrated annually on March 2—which also happens to be the birthday of the beloved children’s book author Dr. Seuss. Are you looking for activities and events to help you celebrate Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss’ birthday in Central Ohio?
Contact your Child’s School. Many school districts across the nation, including those in Central Ohio, hold special reading activities, book fairs and Dr. Seuss themed events during Read Across America day—or sometime during the week. Contact your child’s school or classroom teachers—even if there is not a large scale event, there may be smaller themed activities that could use some last minute volunteers.
Visit the Columbus Metropolitan Library. Check out the Columbus Metro Library event page for a listing of story times and activities. Many times individual branches will hold special family events in honor of Read Across America or Dr. Seuss’ special day, such as “Seussabration” hosted in 2011 by the Southeast branch in addition to usual story times.
Visit Local Bookstores. A number of local book stores, including Barnes and Noble stores, throughout the Columbus Metro area hold weekly story times. In 2011, the Lennox Town Barnes and Noble store is holding a Dr. Seuss Storytime on March 3. Check with your favorite book store for special Read Across America or Dr. Seuss Birthday events.
Not able to attend a public Read Across America event this year? With the many cold and flu bugs circulating in the Columbus area, it may be difficult to head out to celebrate the day. There are a number of online options to help you. Visit Barnes and Noble’s online storytime where, for the month of March 2011, celebrity cooking show star Rachel Ray reads Green Eggs and Ham. Visit the National Education Association’s website for activities, ideas and to make your pledge to celebrate the national day of reading. Check out Seussvile for activities, games and craft ideas or take a time out with PBS and watch the two-hour Dr. Seuss marathon or visit the site to explore themed games and activities.
There are lots of fun ways to strengthen the kids’ love of reading and introduce them to the world of Dr. Seuss during the national Read Across America Day!
