Ramadan is an annual celebration of the Muslim holiday celebrated by over 1 billion people worldwide. For 2009, Ramadan in the United States begins around August 22nd. Although the specific dates of the spiritual observance may vary, the “Eid” festival marks the end of Ramadan.
Ramadan, celebrated during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is observed by fasting, prayers, reflection, worship, self-sacrifice and restraint. Fasting, believed to teach patience and modesty, begins every morning at sunrise and lasts until sunset. Besides fasting, smoking and abstinence from sexual relations is also required during the holy month. Many girls decorate their palms with henna during Ramadan.
