Celebrate New Hampshire -- and the Constitution's -- 225th birthday!

June 21, 2013 marks the 225th birthday of the US Constitution and – not coincidentally – the 225th birthday of the state of New Hampshire, “the state that made us a nation.” Strawbery Banke Museum invites residents of the state to visit, free, June 15 through 23, and will cap the week-long celebration with a 225th birthday party for the state.

The dates for the state and the Constitution birthdays are the same because it was New Hampshire’s vote to ratify the Constitution – the 9th of a “super majority” of the 13 colonies -- that created the United States. The Constitution had been drafted and signed on September 17, 1787 in Philadelphia after three months of debate led by George Washington. Ratification by 6 colonies came quickly, but it took until June for New Hampshire’s legislators to approve.

Strawbery Banke created New Hampshire Week 2013 as thank you gift to all New Hampshire residents. All New Hampshire residents are welcome at the Museum, free of charge (proof of residence required) during the Museum’s usual operating hours, 10AM to 5PM, from Sunday, June 15, 2013 (Father’s Day) through Sunday, June 23, 2013. On Friday, June 21st the Museum will welcome State and local dignitaries for a birthday party with a cake in the shape of New Hampshire created by Wild Orchid Baking Company of Hampton.

At Strawbery Banke, visitors will enjoy 10-acre outdoor history museum with 25 historic buildings and eight gardens, costumed role-players, traditional crafts and hands-on activities for adults, children and families. Admission also includes two special 2013 exhibits, “Tapping Portsmouth: How the Brewing Industry Shaped the City” and “First Nations Diplomacy: The 300th Anniversary of the 1713 Treaty of Portsmouth” between the English Colonials and the Native Americans of coastal Maine and New Hampshire.

New Hampshire's is a birthday worth celebrating for many "firsts" that took place in the state. Strawbery Banke Museum is one of many places statewide to enjoy that history.
