Many people will celebrate .National Social Media Day on June 30 without even knowing that they are celebrating it. That's because people will use social media without knowing that National Social Media Day was launched in 2010. Therefore, this is the fifth annual Social Media Day.

Social media has become a major vehicle in the world today. It is an annual global event that recognizes the digital revolution that is so popular today. For many of us, it is how we keep up with what our friends are doing, even if they’re on the other side of the world. From Australia to the Philippines, all the way to Sri Lanka and Morocco, countries come together every June to participate in this global movement. Social media is the social interaction among people in which they create, share or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities.

Social media plays a big part in our lives today. According to Internet World Stats, more than 2.4 billion people around the world use the internet. That's one-third of the global population. In the last several years, the growth of social media has made it possible for people from all walks of life to communicate in unique, personal and effective ways. The internet connects millions of people each day. Even in the most isolated areas of the globe, there are people online.

There are various statistics that account for social media usage and effectiveness for individuals worldwide. Some of the most recent statistics are as follows:

Total time spent on social media in the U.S. across PCs and mobile devices increased 37 percent to 121 billion minutes in July 2012, compared to 88 billion in July 2011.[6]

Facebook remains the most-visited social network in the U.S. via PC (152.2 million visitors), mobile apps (78.4 million users) and mobile web (74.3 million visitors), and is multiple times the size of the next largest social site across each platform. Facebook's 1.28 billion users inhabited a country, it would be the second-largest in the world, behind only China's 1.36 billion. Twitter would rank No. 4, just ahead of Indonesia's 247 million residents — and that's counting only Twitter's 255 million active users.

Australia has some of the highest social media usage in the world. In usage of Facebook, Australia ranks highest, with over nine million users spending almost nine hours per month on the site. YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world.

Whether you use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest or something else online, you will be joining with fellow social media enthusiasts all over the world.
