There is no better holiday in the month of December than National Sangria Day! Well, maybe there is one, but if you're going to have a jolly old elf running around your house, a nice adult beverage might just make it all a little better.
Celebrated each year on Dec. 20, the yearly festival offers a chance for lovers of the famous wine punch to indulge in the pursuit of the perfect drink mixture. Guests at the Sip Rooftop Wine Bar in Greenville, SC happily enjoy the beverage, prepared tableside to order with fresh ingredients.
The restaurant was kind enough to share two of their favorite variations on this popular beverage.
2 bottles Zinfandel
2 lemons, sliced
2 limes, sliced
1 orange, sliced
8 oz. Orange juice
8 oz. Cranberry juice
12 oz simple syrup
1/2 bottle Cava
Muddle fruit, then combine all ingredients except Cava. Mix in the Cava at the end and serve in a wine glass over ice, garnished with cranberries.
New Zealand Sangria
2 bottles New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc
16 oz. Mango/kiwi puree (recipe follows)
12 oz. Simple syrup
Combine all ingredients and serve in a wine glass over ice, garnished with sliced strawberries.
Mango/Kiwi Puree – combine fresh, peeled mangoes and kiwis in a blender at a ratio of three kiwis for
every one mango. Puree until smooth.
"Sangria is a great greeter cocktail for your holiday party," stated beverage director Brent Tate. "You have the option to make it the night before, which will allow the flavors of the fruit and wine to marry. It will also save yourself the stress of mixing individual cocktails on the night of your party. To avoid diluting the flavor, don't add ice to the bowl or pitcher."
