Celebrate National Frankfurter and Kraut Week with recipes from celebrity chefs

The second week in February is National Frankfurter and Kraut Week, celebrating one of the most iconicly blue collar of all foods, the hot dog topped with sauerkraut.  And while weenies and kraut may not sound like the kind of thing that would attract the attention of celebrity chefs, the popularity of competition shows like Top Chef and Iron Chef America have made it popular for celebrity chefs to show off their skill by creating high quality remakes of blue collar favorites.

Here you will find links to recipes from some of the world's most famous celebrity chefs to help you celebrate National Frankfurter and Kraut Week in style.

Alton Brown's Sauerkraut Recipe

If any celebrity chef was ahead of the curve in transforming blue collar cuisine, it's Alton Brown.  His show Good Eats was almost completely dedicated to using science to improve popular comfort foods.  His sauerkraut recipe is no different, using juniper berries and caraway seed to give his kraut an extra bite.

Robert Irvine's Seafood Hot Dogs with Sweet Mustard Sauerkraut Recipe

Dinner Impossible host Robert Irvine has a history of taking on, and beating, daunting challenges.  But you don't get much more daunting than transforming hot dogs and kraut into a seafood dish.  But that's just what Irvine does here, with scallops, shrimp, sea bass, and salmon replacing the traditional beef or pork as the dog filling.

New York Street Cart Dog recipe from Bobby Flay

Iron Chef Bobby Flay stopped by CBS Early Show a while back to give a lesson on the different regional varieties of hot dogs, including this recipe for a traditional New York Street Cart Dog with Sauerkraut and Onion Sauce.

The Feenie Weenie

Chef Rob Feenie brings a Canadian sensibility to this German-American favorite with a recipe that combines cheese smokies with choucroute, a French variation on traditional sauerkraut.

While you're waiting on those Frankfurters and Sauerkraut to cook, you can read up about both with some hot dog trivia and the long history of sauerkraut.
