Did you know that April 11th is National Cheese Fondue Day? A traditional Swedish meal, fondue is a communal way to enjoy a hot meal. Fondue dates back to the 1500’s in Switzerland, where it made a filling meal for hungry sheepherders. Traditional cheese fondue consists of Swiss or other types of cheeses, herbs, starch, and wine, which is melted slowly in a pot kept over low heat so that the cheese remains liquid but does not burn. Those sharing a fondue pot spear bits of food such as bread cubes, fruit, or veggies, and dip them into the pot of melted cheese. Cheese fondue with bread and vegetables is a unique, delicious, and filling way to eat meat-free.
Whether you are a fan of fondue, or have never tried it but perhaps love cheese of the prospect of sharing a communal pot of food for dinner with your friends, Chicago is gearing up for some fantastic National Cheese Fondue Day specials:
