Architecture is one of those things that makes San Francisco. To study it is to have a better sense of the city where we live – and this is the beauty of the Architecture and the City Festival, which takes place Sept. 1-30. Put on by the San Francisco chapter of the American Institute of Architects, this ninth annual event offers films, workshops, tours, food tastings, lectures and plenty more.
Among my favorite offerings are the San Francisco Home Tours, which throw open the doors of some of the city's most interesting residential projects. Homes in Noe Valley, SOMA, Bernal Heights and Dolores Heights will be among those featured during this year's tours. Tickets are $70 per day for AIA members and $85 per day for general admission. Admission to the Architects' Forum only is $20.
So why do I like this festival so much? Well, it takes a penetrating look not only at the principles of design but how they can be applied to tackle urban problems such as dwindling food systems and the disappearance of leisure time. If you're interested in these issues, this is an event for you.
Do you plan to attend the festival? If so, let me know! I'd love to see you there.
