Celebrate Irish eats at Molly's Downtown

Everyone knows that along with warmer weather, March bring St. Patty's Day.  In honor of this Irish holiday, take part in a classic meal at Molly Brannigan's at 2nd and Walnut Street.  This authentic restaurant features a beautiful interior assembled by Irish carpenters which give it a distinct atmosphere and totally unique ambiance.  

You wouldn't think, by looking at the common suspects, that you can manage to find a healthy meal at an Irish eatery such as this one, but let me reassure you, it is possible.  I know it may seem a little scary that the first things this place features are the "Bangers & Mash" (sausage and potatoes), "Fish & Chips" (fried fish and french fries), and Shepherd's Pie (beef, mashed potatoes, cheese, and starchy vegetables), but there are some other legit choices that will prevent the old belt loosening when finishing your meal. 

Start off with a Spinach salad (Fresh baby spinach, Feta cheese, green apples, craisins, bacon, red onions & tomatoes all tossed with our pomegranate vinaigrette) to up your "greens" intake and satiate your hunger so that you can keep your entree more on the light side.  This is just one of eight salads you have to choose from! 

For an entree, go with the Madge's Chicken dish, comprised of two tender char-grilled chicken breasts with rice pilaf and steamed vegetables.  Keep portion control in check by asking for a box and taking one of the breasts home!  They'll ask you what seasoning you'd like between rich BBQ, spicy cajun, or lemon pepper.  My guess is that the BBQ sauce, like most, is packed with sugar and carbs, so stick with the "spices" when asked about seasoning.

They also give you the option of a "lunch sized portion for a pint-sized price", so if you would like to splurge a little bit, at least keep it to a rational size such as this.  Really want to go traditional Irish?   A less guilt-free option would be the Boxty menu.  Try the Chicken, Roasted Vegetable, or Steak Boxty which is an array of mixed vegetables, meat, and an Irish potato pancake.  With this choice, consider saving some of the pancake for later and filling up on lean protein and vegetables!
