April is International Guitar Month. For everyone in the Des Moines area, there are a couple frugal options for families to increase their appreciation of guitars.

Steven Kennedy, president of the Heart of Iowa Classical Guitar Society, recently said via email, “There are three events that we are involved with in April.” Two of April’s shows are free, and listed below. The third, and all other events associated with the society, can be found at its website.

Other guitar-related ideas include crafting a toy guitar from recycled cardboard boxes and rubber bands and listening to free music from the internet or any of the area's wonderful public libraries. Some families may like to have an air guitar show or play a video game based on guitar playing.

Kennedy stated further that his group's “ are really not suitable for younger, potentially restless children (due to the length of the concerts), but generally children age 8 and older are okay.”

Live concerts can be a great way to increase one’s interest in music lessons and music appreciation, and many children enjoy seeing instrumentalists at work. The Society holds free concerts for several different artists at a variety of venues in the central Iowa region throughout the year.
