Pizza Fusion, that is. Imagine eating some really delicious pizza from a restaurant that’s truly green. Not greenwashing as a topping, green as in the real deal. Pizza Fusion has taken the time to do it right, approaching the restaurant’s greening holistically and implementing green practices wherever possible. For example, if you order delivery, your pizza’s coming in a hybrid or fuel-efficient car, in an eco-friendly box you can cash in for discounts if you return it to the store. If you order in, your pizza’s served on a table made from reclaimed wood, surrounded by post-industrial drywall with low VOC paints and artwork printed on recycled plastic bottle material. Light bulbs are CFLs, toilets are dual-flow, the floors are soy-based and the countertops are made from recycled glass. Now that’s a full menu of green building practices! Oh, and organic ingredients are featured fare, vegans will be satiated and gluten-free crust is available. Pizza Fusion also serves salads, sandwiches, desserts and beverages including organic beer.
I met owner Jeff Melnick at Laura Turner Seydel’s Eco-Friendly Trunk Show held at EcoManor last Thursday. Melnick delivered several pizzas which Seydel served her guests for lunch. The thin crust was perfect and the toppings really tasty. And not greasy! Melnick was proud to tell me that Pizza Fusion will be the first LEED certified restaurant in Atlanta – the only question is whether it will be Silver or Gold certified.
Putting his dough where his mouth is, Melnick is planning a huge Earth Day Celebration from 11 AM – 10 PM on Wednesday, April 22. The first 50 people to walk, run, bike, take MARTA or drive a hybrid car get a free personal organic cheese pizza and Honest Tea. There are other promotions, and you can meet Captain Planet from 5 – 9 PM. A portion of the proceeds benefits the Captain Planet Foundation.
Pizza Fusion is a franchised organization with about two dozen locations around the country. The corporate slogan is “Fresh, Organic, Earth Friendly”. Melnick has owned his Buckhead location for two years now, with future plans to expand in the ATL. The address is 2233 Peachtree Road, just down the hill a 3-iron from Piedmont Hospital.
