Celebrate Earth Day: Free birdhouse workshop for kids this Saturday

Your child can build their own birdhouse at a workshop this Saturday.
Your child can build their own birdhouse at a workshop this Saturday.

The birds are back in town!! The nesting boxes are filling up fast! What better way to celebrate Earth Day than to take your child to a free recycled birdhouse building workshop on Saturday? Kosciusko County Recycling Depot in Warsaw (220 South Union Street) will present the workshop. Only the first 16 children who arrive will be able to make birdhouses. Call 574-372-3087 for more information.

If your child is not one of the lucky first 16, or you can't make it to Warsaw on Saturday, there are plenty of simple birdhouse plans available on the internet. Many local hardware stores (Ace and Lowes, probably others) have simple birdhouse kits available. One warning - decorative birdhouses and feeders (from craft stores or the craft area of Walmarts) are considered decorative and are not capable of withstanding  outdoor conditions.

Birdhouse construction tips and a birdhouse slideshow will be addressed in a future article.

The Depot will also be presenting a composting workshop. All attendees will receive a coupon for $5 off a composter, and one attendee will win a free composter.

There will be an energy conservation workshop at 1 PM, with advice on making your home more energy efficient.

WIOE will be broadcasting live from the Depot, and the milk jug recycling judging will also be concluded.

Have a lovely Earth Day celebration a few days late at the Warsaw Recycling Depot.
