Celebrate Beer: Four Peaks Microbrewery

Beer has probably been around as long as man in one form or another. Archeological evidence points that man’s first efforts with grains were for beer vice bread. As with many things it was most likely a happy accident and the fermentation of stored grain and wild yeasts that created the first brew. There were no flavorings added as such, so it was probably a pretty watery drink. The Sumerians and the Pharos all enjoyed lifting a glass or two, but it wasn’t until the introduction of Hops that beer came into its own. In a book entitled “Beer,” Michael Jackson  puts forth the theory that hops was originally used as an antiseptic to clean brewing vessels and eventually became an important ingredient.

Today there has been a trend to go back to beer’s roots and brew some of the earlier varieties at home. This in turn led to a bloom of Microbreweries as amateur’s attempts took off and caught on within their communities. Some of the Microbreweries are no longer so micro and are increasing their distribution, yet manage to maintain the handcrafted quality.

These beers are readily available in the market or at brewpubs throughout the US, so put down the industrial dishwater and pick up a real beer crafted for drinking enjoyment rather than making potential one night stands look better than they really are.

One Microbrewery that stands out here in Arizona is Four Peaks. Kilt Lifter is their claim to fame and is one of the finest ales available. Full bodied, malty, and refreshing this Scottish ale is a true work of art. Four Peaks Hefeweizen and PIA are also top notch. Visit the restaurant and have one of the best burgers in Arizona and wash it down with one of their seasonal beers. Tough to beat burgers and beer!

The brewpub has a full menu from pub food to enchiladas to specialties incorporating some of their beers. Everything is delicious and satisfying. Be aware the brewpub is very popular and tends to be crowded, but service at the bar is quick and friendly.
