Andy N. Condor is Tracy Aviary's most celebrated resident, and on January 18 from 1-3 p.m. visitors can celebrate his 55th birthday with a range of special activities. Craft projects will include coloring a card for Andy, helping wrap his birthday gifts and creating personalized condor hand prints. Special bird encounters with some of Andy's South American cousins are also planned, and free cake will be served.
Andy is an Andean condor (Vultur gryphus). These birds are native to South America, and have the largest wing surface area of any bird in the world. By both size and weight, Andean condors are one of the world's largest raptors! In 2013, Andy moved into a new exhibit specially designed to give him a spacious, comfortable and entertaining home – the King of the Andes exhibit is in the northwestern corner of the aviary and offers guests an up close view of Andy. But he regularly comes out of his enclosure for strolls around the aviary, and he's sure to be out celebrating on his birthday!
Tracy Aviary is located at the southwest corner of Liberty Park in Salt Lake City. The facility is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and admission is $7 for adults, $5 for children ages 3-12 and free for children age 2 and younger. Discounts are available for groups, seniors, students and military members. Visitors should note that despite the festive nature of the party, no balloons, scooters or pets are allowed in the aviary.
