Cee Lo Green made a serious faux pas when he decided to change the lyrics to the song "Imagine" by John Lennon during NBC's New Year's Eve show on December 31, 2011 in New York, NY. The singer and coach of The Voice made the ill-advised decision to sing "Nothing to kill or die for, And all religion's true." The song, as John Lennon wrote it, goes "Nothing to kill or die for, And no religion too."
According to The Huffington Post, Cee Lo Green tried to make amends on his Twitter account, but later deleted all the messages:
"Yo I meant no disrespect by changing the lyric guys! I was trying to say a world were [sic] u could believe what u wanted that's all."
John Lennon's original intention seems to be that nothing, including religion, is worth killing or dying for. Cee Lo Green's message may have been intended to be tolerant of all religions.
The funniest Twitter response to Cee Lo Green's version of John Lennon's imagine is hilarious:
"UnstableIsotope Oh noez! Cee-Lo Green says all religion is true! I'm gonna have to brush up on my Zeus mythology. Does he like burnt offerings?"
