Cee Lo Green perverts John Lennon’s atheist anthem ‘Imagine’ - fans outraged

Fans are outraged after performer Cee Lo Green perverted John Lennon’s atheist anthem “Imagine” on NBC's New Year's Eve show. Green changed the lyrics of the much beloved Lennon tune from "Nothing to kill or die for, And no religion too" to "Nothing to kill or die for, And all religion's true."

Green’s controversial and much maligned performance happened right before the ball dropped in New York’s Times Square. Immediately after the performance, Green’s Twitter account was bombarded by countless angry fans disgusted and shocked that Green would dare pervert the Lennon classic, and completely distort the meaning and significance of the powerful song.

In response to the immediate and fierce criticism, Green posted the following message to his Twitter account:

"Yo I meant no disrespect by changing the lyric guys! I was trying to say a world were u could believe what u wanted that's all."

However, Green’s tweet did little to comfort angry fans, and the tweets only degenerated as Green exchanged numerous expletive filled tweets with disgusted and angry fans. Ultimately Green deleted all the tweets relating to the regrettable episode from his Twitter account. However, excerpts of the vulgar exchange are preserved over at Huff Post for those voyeurs who might enjoy the Twitter train wreck.

The following is a sample of relevant tweets from Sunday’s Twitter stream:

Cee Lo Green rewriting John Lennon is like Stephanie Meyer rewriting James Joyce.

CeeLo... If you didn't like John Lennon's song the way it was, why did you sing it?

Dear Cee Lo: forget you

I kind of feel like Cee Lo Green has vandalised a classic piece of artwork.

Dear Cee-Lo Green, To quote you (accurately), "F*** you." Signed, me.

"Imagine no possessions. As I stand here dripping in bling. How on Earth did I get here? I can't even sing........" Cee Lo Green

If you change that particular lyric in Imagine, then you probably don't get it

John Lennon is turning over in his grave as Cee Lo Green butchers "Imagine" in Times Square.

Wow Cee Lo Green has big one's, rewriting the lyrics to John Lennon song? That's like painting over the Mona Lisa because she's not smiling!

What do you think about Green perverting the Lennon classic?
