Cedartown merchant meeting for Hollywood film, 'Jayne Mansfield's Car'

The Downtown Cedartown merchant meeting to discuss the Hollywood film, "Jayne Mansfield's Car"  was very informative and upbeat. The meeting kicked off with opening remarks by Cedartown City Commission Chairman John Barrett. He expressed his amazement that a Hollywood movie was actually going to be filmed in Cedartown. He thanked the downtown merchants for their efforts and sacrifices in helping to make this a reality.

Commissioner Barrett then introduced Mark Cottrell from Market Films who informed merchants of what they could expect in the coming weeks.  Mr. Cottrell expressed his gratitude and spoke of how friendly and hospitable the commissioners, merchants and city employee's have been.

Mr. Cottrell stated that the drama/comedy titled, "Jayne Mansfield's Car", will be starring Robert Duvall as the family patriarch, Billy Bob Thornton, Kevin Bacon, English Actor John Hurt and the female lead will be played by Australian actress, Frances O'Connor.

All extras have been cast, however, they are prepared to call in a few more if needed. Approximately 50 period cars have also been cast.

Several store fronts will be re-dressed within the next few days. West Cinema has recently been repainted with close to original colors. The murals on the side of Moore's Soda Fountain have been covered and will be painted to appear as brick.

The building next door to Moore's will be the scene of a barber shop. Moore's Soda Fountain will appear in a  scene where John Hurt's character and his family have lunch. There will be a high school band scene behind the West Theater, approximately 100 extras have been cast for this scene.

Filming is scheduled to begin in mid to late June for 3-4 days of filming. Traffic will be diverted at that time and Main Street will be closed from Ware Street to Prior Street.

Cottrell reminded merchants that part of the excitement about movie making will be seeing Main Street transformed into a bygone era. Another wonderful aspect is that several original period items from local businesses will be used in the film.

Cottrell shared a funny moment that occurred the first day that Billy Bob Thornton arrived in Cedartown. He stated that Billy Bob was with a member of the production crew, who was an elderly gentleman, and this gentleman "had to go", so the two made their way into a local store to ask permission to use the facilities and within 3 minutes, there was about 20 girls in that store.

Many merchants thanked Mr. Cottrell for choosing our town. Mr. Kenneth Browning expressed his thanks to Mr. Cottrell for everything that they are doing for West Cinema.

City Commissioner Scotty Tillery closed the meeting by expressing his gratitude that Cedartown was chosen. He stated that the commissioners wanted to make Cedartown, Ga. one of the easiest places in Georgia to film a movie. He touched base on the state tax incentives and stated that we could end up having more movies made in our town. He expressed hope for that to become a reality.
