After their son died, Olivia and her ex-husband split up because Stan pulled away rather than face his feelings and allowing himself to grieve. Olivia seems to be moving forward in her relationship with the town’s new newspaper editor, Jack Griffith, but it appears he might now have some competition as Stan comes to town more frequently. Stan is trying to rebuild his relationship with their daughter, Justine, who he also pulled away from when her brother died, but it appears that he’s also reaching out to Olivia, and Jack is none too happy about it.
Unbeknownst to his current wife, Stan is seeing a therapist who is helping him work though his grief. He shares that with Olivia, even coaxing her into accompanying him to a therapy session where they discuss how each of them coped with their son’s death differently. They had a touching breakthrough which opens them up to more revelation, even sharing a touching moment on a park bench where their fingers meet.
Jack was supposed to meet Olivia at her house after the bachelor auction ended, but is concerned when he finds she isn’t there. Olivia had gone home to find Stan was leaving a gift on her doorstep - their son’s radio controlled boat. She encourages him to accompany her to the lake where their son died, and they enjoy moments of nostalgia as they play with the boat and grieve together for the first time for the son they lost.
Stan has alluded to problems at home, and now that he’s coming to terms with their son’s loss, will he and Olivia revive the spark that they once had? Where will that leave Jack, the recovering alcoholic who is still rebounding from the loss of his old life in Philadelphia and more recent relationship with his son?
