Cecilia Abbott, wife of Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, appeared in Wichita Falls, Texas recently, for an event called "Pachanga con Cecilia Abbott" (Party with Cecilia Abbott), according to Eileen Levy, one of the leaders of the Wichita County Republican Women(WCRW) today, Friday, June 27. Invited to Wichita Falls by the WCRW and Hispanic Republican women groups, Ms. Abbott explained why she believes her husband would make an excellent governor for the state of Texas.

Ms. Levy said that Ms. Abbott basically explained during her speech that "this is who I am and why my husband would be a good man for the job" of governor of the State of Texas in front of an enthusiastic audience who attended the event at First Bank located at Ninth and Lamar in downtown Wichita Falls.

Although she is married to the larger than life Greg Abbott, Ms. Abbott has carved out an exceptional life for herself not only as a supporter for her husband, but also as a leader in the field of education. She served as a teacher, vice-principal and then principal at several schools across the Lone Star State. One of her positions was serving as the principal of the Cathedral School of St. Mary in Austin from 1996 to 2001.

Current Texas Governor Ricky Perry appointed Cecilia to the State Board of Educator Certification, where she served from 2001 to 2008. She has also focused on health care for seniors. Since 2004, she has served as the managing director of community relations at Harden Healthcare, a network of senior adult health care facilities and services.

Cecilia achieved the American Dream in her own life. The granddaughter of immigrants from Mexico, Cecilia was raised in San Antonio by parents who were both educators. They taught Cecilia, her sister and two brothers the significance of obtaining an education. She studied two years at the University of Texas.

She went on to earn three degrees at the University of St. Thomas in Houston: a Bachelor's degree in Psychology, a Master's degree in Education and a Master's degree in Theology.

Cecilia is also a classical music devotee having begun piano training at the age of six. That training turned out to have even more significance than she realized at the time. She serenaded her future husband from behind the keyboard with music when she moved into the Castilian Dorm at UT. He reportedly had never before heard the likes of such music before meeting her.

It was the start of a great romance which has resulted in a storybook marriage of 31 years. They currently live with their daughter Audrey in Austin.

Cecilia talked about how she and Greg met in college, his life-altering accident and how he overcame the crushing adversity to have an exceptional career as Attorney General for the State of Texas. Others have said Cecilia played a crucial role in her husband's amazing recovery from an injury which could have been fatal and definitely would have caused many people to give up.

Cecilia has talked before about how mentally tough her husband was before the jogging accident in 1984 which paralyzed him from the waist down. She said he took that mental toughness to a whole new level after the accident.

Friends have said that while he was recovering from surgery following the accident, Cecilia would host social events in their home and invite friends over to visit with her husband.

While Cecilia mentioned Greg's recovery was a testament to his character, many observers across the state have said the role she played was evidence of of her own strength.

Cecilia, 54, would make history by becoming the first Latina first lady in Texas, if her husband is elected governor. The polls indicate he is ahead in that race which will end on election day in November.

She is also unequivocally conservative, firmly opposing abortion, including in the case of incest and rape.

"We just don't discriminate against a child because of its beginnings," she said to the San Antonio Express.

Ms. Levy said Cecilia also discussed adopting their daughter Audrey and the importance of opportunity during her presentation at the meeting in Wichita Falls. Levy also said, "She talked about the typical values the GOP stands for."

Levy also said the event was jointly hosted by the Wichita County Republican Women and Hispanic Republican Women to explore shared values of hard work, faith, family and economic opportunity.

Ms. Levy said the steering committee of which she is a part will have another major event for Wichita Falls which is now in the planning stages. She also said she is membership chair for WCRW.

Representative JasonVillalba was also a speaker at the event and discussed the need to secure the Texas border and the pro-life issue. A senator representing Texas House District 114, Villalba also discussed the immigration issue. Cecilia and Villalba were invited to speak by both the WCRW and Hispanic Republicans.

Cecilia's speech provided insight into who she is and how her values as a Hispanic align with her values as a Republican.

While the story of the Texas governor's race for 2014 is of national and perhaps even historic significance, the story of the woman who is the wife and life partner of Greg Abbott is one that transcends the ages.

The story of the romance of Greg and Cecilia Abbott is an incredible example of resilience in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Together they have already proven it is possible to overcome incredible odds in life.
