Most people are not worried about the common cold, and usually it’s not fatal. But according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s article entitled, “Novel Coronavirus Recently Detected” a new coronovavirus usually responsible for the common cold is causing a severe respiratory illness. Even though the virus is similar to the SARS virus, it is different from any other coronavirus found in humans. It has sickened 14 and proven fatal to 8 people so far from Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Kingdom.
Even though there are no reports of anyone in the United States getting infected, the disease is passed person to person which means that anyone who has traveled to these countries may need to get themselves checked out. It also causes local concerns due to how easily it is transmitted and the little knowledge available on this type of coronavirus.
The acute and severe symptoms include fever, cough, and shortness of breath with only one report of mild symptoms.
According to the CDC, the infections in Britain started with a 60-year-old man who had recently traveled to Pakistan and Saudi Arabia and developed a respiratory illness. He passed the infection to two family members and has subsequently caused the death of one member.
The article explains that the term coronavirus refers to their crown-like spikes on their surface. They are common viruses that most people get in their lifetime. These viruses usually cause mild to moderate upper-respiratory tract illnesses and may also infect animals.
