This week CDC has come out with a graph detailing the 2010 Salmonella infections caused by consumption of eggs on the list of recalled eggs. In addition to displaying the recent Salmonella poisoning cases due to recalled eggs, the graph also draws comparisons to what the average Salmonella infection rate would be in the United States if there were no reports of large quantities of recalled eggs or other food items.
According to CDC news, the first noticeable spike in reported Salmonella infections in association with recalled eggs occurred back in May 2010. The preliminary data released by the CDC is not yet conclusive enough to determine the true number of Salmonella Enteriditis cases related to the list of recalled eggs. Over the course of the next few months, the CDC will be researching the difference between the "expected" Salmonella poisoning cases that were not caused by the egg recall and the cases that were. In turn, a more thorough report should be released in the coming months giving a more accurate representation of the portion of the Salmonella outbreak directly caused by the listed recalled eggs.
The CDC will be performing extensive testing using advanced molecular techniques to ensure that "expected" Salmonella infections are not lumped into the same category as Salmonella infections caused by recalled eggs. The CDC has teamed up with the FDA to narrow down the true cause of all reported Salmonella poisoning cases since 2010. One of their primary strategies will be testing chicken feed to determine if that is where the problem originated.
