CD Review: The Georgia Flood deliver a flood of good music

The Georgia Flood is a trio of young musicians from Atlanta who make many of us hopeful for the future of blues in the local area. They just released their first self-titled CD and it is exceptional..

The CD contains five original tunes by band members Lane Kelly and Brooks Mason Kelly, which stand up easily beside the cover tunes. My favorite of the original tunes are "Lie to Me" and "I Thought I Was a Man," but each of them is a quality song.

For the cover songs, the young men keep the tone light and do not attempt the more somber, world-weary blues older musicians might offer. They offer fun takes on Albert King's "Crosscut Saw" and Robert Johnson's "Dust My Broom." There are also amusing versions of "I Don't Want No Woman" and "Messin' With the Kid."

Another entry on the CD that will please Atlanta blues fans is the cover of Sean Costello's "Hard Luck Woman." I think that Sean would be pleased with this cover on his song by local musicians who started out early like he did.

The Georgia Flood is a group to watch and you should pick up the new CD at a show or from their website store. It is highly recommended. Special mention goes to Rich L'Hommedieu at Midnight Circus Productions for doing a great job on the recording, producing and mixing!
