CD Review: The Chasm - "Deathcult For Eternity: The Triumph"

The Chasm - Deathcult For Eternity: The Triumph

Oz Productions (1998)

Rating: B-

Like a crop nearing harvest, this album finds The Chasm's career at a developmental stage that is budding with potential yet still unfit for consumption.

Vocals continue to experiment with some questionable wails in the higher register, percussion lacks the detail of later albums and the garage-style production saps much of the band's energy with its flat, guitar-dominant mix.

Like all aspects of this recording, the compositions on Deathcult… simply lack the refinement evident in 2002’s Conjuration of the Spectral Empire, with some weak fade-out endings and a large number of throw-away riffs overshadowing the few scattered flowerings.

Notes: The Chasm records are notoriously hard to find, but a slip-case version of Deathcult... is routinely stocked for $11 on the Century Media webstore.
