Coffee Project – Concrete Boots EP (Paper + Plastick)
Thanks to the quirky duo Coffee Project, I finally realized what the genre of acoustic folk punk was missing: A trombone. Need proof? Check out the latest from the Gainesville, FL band, comprised of singer/guitarist Jake Crown and trombonist/backup vocalist Buddy Schaub. Just wouldn’t sound the same without that instrument.
The five-song EP Concrete Boots is a solid follow up to last year’s full length. It starts out slow with “Shenandoah Valley,” but quickly makes up for it with four of their best songs yet, especially, the unexpectedly upbeat “Exit Stage Left” (oddly enough, a break up song) and the stellar cover of Malvina Reynolds’ “Little Houses”.
Band geeks rejoice! Trombones just aren’t for ska bands and polkas any more.
