From the opening note struck on the first song of AM's latest album Future Sons & Daughters, listeners are greeted with enticingly intelligent indie art pop that warms the spirit and swells the heart. Reminding the world that pop music is a delicate and appealing art form that should be taken seriously, AM's eleven-track record is a little disc of sunshine sent to brighten your day. AM's talent-laden voice is all at once calming and comforting, yet edgy and distinct.
The opening track "A Complete Unknown", is a short but sweet song offering a jazzy beat below AM's soothing vocals. Simple melodies mix with saccharine lyrics in "The Other Side", while the melody is reminiscent of a country folk tune. The addition of female vocals on "It's Been So Long" places a gentle touch on the darker, shadowy garage rock song. "Darker Days" comes in with a funky, sexy beat resounding underneath echoing vocals that slide into high notes to sing of putting gloomy days behind, while the punchy "Self Preservation" channels a bit of the Beach Boys style..
AM displays his musical and lyrical depth on "Leavenworth", a quiet and forlorn ballad about past times. The bluesy "Grand Opinion", rounded out by brief but welcome horn sections, will put a skip in your step, while the clever lyrics will grip your brain and keep you deep in thought. "Fortunate Family Trees" is undeniably catchy and enveloping, while "When The Dust Settles" delivers indie rock sprinkled with psychedelic sounds and a trippy interlude. A rock and roll feel immediately emanates from the instrumental "Jorge Ben" and the album comes to a close with the aptly named "Endings Are Beginnings", an intricate piano arrangement that leaves listeners yearning for more, yet overly satisfied with what they got.
AM goes above and beyond on Future Sons & Daughters to prove his worth as a relevant artist in the music scene today. His passion is irrefutable, his talent is compelling, and he and his band have hit the mark with their latest release.
