Mexico’s CF Pachuca did a number on Guatemala’s CSD Municipal with a 7-3 victory at the Mateo Flores Stadium in Guatemala City in CONCACAF Champions League action. The Tuzos take the group lead with 6 points and are on good pace to advance into the knock-off round.
Despite the number of goals, the Mexicans faced tough opposition from a Guatemalan side that never eased off on their game. Abraham Carreño registered a “hat trick” for the Mexicans and Carlos “Pescadito” Ruiz scored a brace for the home side.
Ruiz opened scoring for the Guatemalans on a corner kick. The former L.A. Galaxy striker was unmarked and on first touch hammered the ball past Oscar “Conejo” Perez to give the local fans reason to cheer.
The lead would not last long. Three minutes later Abraham Carreño centered to Aviles Hurtado who slid and pushed the ball into the net to close the gap 1-1. Tuzos would take the lead in the 20th minute with a goal from Carreño who crossed to the keeper’s far post for the 2-1.
Carreño took part in Pachuca’s third goal when he was taken down by defender Dennis Lopez. Ariel Nahuelpan took the shot and beat the keep who dove to his left. The Argentine shoot to the center for the 3-1 in the 40th minute.
With a minute left in the game Carreño would give Pachuca the 4-1 before the break. Carreño shot from outside the area and found goalkeeper Santiago Morandi’s top far corner for his second goal of the game.
The local side would get their second goal of the game in the 49th with a shot down the center from outside the area by Diego De Souza for the 4-2. The shot caught Perez off guard and the ball bounced into the net before the “rabbit” could jump to stop it from entering his net.
In the 58th minute Pachuca managed a counterstrike from the near wing. Hurtado took the ball and moved past the defense that was caught off guard. He centered to Erik Gutierrez who was inbound and unmarked. Gutierrez hammered on first touch finding Morandi’s near-post for the 5-2.
The referee made an error calling a penalty against Pachuca when defender Hugo Rodriguez went for the ball and Ruiz fell on the play. Ruiz shot to Perez’ right and converted for the 5-3.
The game was back and forth with both teams pushing to get more goals in the net. In the 80th Hurtado took the ball and moved past the defense to center to Carreño who stopped the ball with his back to Morandi. Carreño spun and fired a low shot that the keeper could not prevent from entering his net. The Mexicans took a 6-3 lead.
The night wasn’t over for Pachuca. In the 90 +1 Tuzos would add once more. Hirving Lozano beats out the entire Municipal defense and took the ball into the area. Instead of shooting he saw that Nahuelpan had a better shot and passed back to the Argentine who simply pushed it into an open net for the final 7-3.
Municipal will face Real España in their next champion’s league game at the Mateo Flores Stadium. Pachuca will host Municipal at the Hidalgo Stadium.
