CCL: Mexico’s America thrashes Bayamon FC

It took 20 minutes for Mexico’s Club America to impose their style of play on Bayamon FC on the grounds of the Azteca Stadium, and the remaining 70 to do as they pleased with the Puerto Rico based team. A team full of youth and back-up players destroyed the Caribbean team 6-1 in Mexico City in their debut in the CONCACAF Champions League.

The first goal fell at the 6th minute of play. Moises Velasco took a shot on goalkeeper Andre Krul’s net from outside the area. The ball took a bounce in front of the keeper who could not control it, allowing the sphere to enter the net for the 1-0.

Two minutes later, Michael Arroyo took advantage of a set-piece. Arroyo shot and found the left near-post. Krul didn’t even move on the play as America took a 2-0 in the 8th minute.

Ventura Alvarado would put the ball in the net in the 14th minute for the 3-0. In the 20th minute Martin Zúñiga scored a beauty. Gil Buron fought for the ball in the area and set up the play. Zúñiga had his back to the posts and did a bicycle kick to make the game 4-0.

With a huge advantage, the America players eased-off on their game. While the eagles maintained possession, they could not get back on the board. In the 45th minute, Buron would get his own goal. The game went into the break with America leading 5-0.

Bayamon would get their honor goal on a corner kick. Nicholas Walker beat the defense and put the ball in the net for the 5-1 in 60th minute. After the goal, the Puerto Rican side moved lines forward applying pressure on the Mexicans. But it was not meant to be.

In the final minutes of the game, America applied more pressure on the visiting side. Zúñiga would get his double in the 90th minute when he beat out the keeper and put the ball in the net for the final 6-1.

Cruz Azul falls in Panama

Cruz Azul’s woes continue. This time in the CONCACAF Champions League. The Cementeros fell 1-0 to Chorrillo FC at the Javier Cruz Stadium in Panama. Justine Arboleda pierced the Azulinos’ net in the 70th minute to give the Panamanians the victory.

La maquina cementera is struggling in both competitions. In La Liga MX, they have only won a single game out of five tries. Their last game in the Champions League was a 1-1 against Costa Rican side Alajuelense at the Azul Stadium.
