CBS Sunday Morning ran a story about sex addiction and its place in the news after a Tiger Woods story broke this week that he checked himself into a sex rehab. The Tiger Woods scandal started Thanksgiving weekend and has continued over the last few months as more and more women came out with their Tiger Woods stories. The public has questioned if Woods would go into a sex rehab program. Monday, it was widely reported that Woods checked himself into one of the best sex rehab programs in the country called the Pine Grove sex rehab center in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
CBS Sunday morning asked, can a person really be addicted to sex? Adult magazines, prostitutes, internet porn, and massage parlors are just a few of ways that self proclaimed sex addicts say they get pulled in. 3-5% of the American population engages in sexual addiction behavior, according to the CBS Sunday morning. Susan Cheever, the author of Desire: Where Sex Meets Addiction said that addiction typically comes in sets and that sex addiction is masked or doubled with alcoholism, drug abuse or childhood abuse.
The CBS Sunday Morning report showed both sides of the sex addition question, but never really answered it or came to a conclusion. Each person they interviewed felt strongly that it was either a terrible addiction, or something that people made up to use as an excuse for their behavior. If people cannot agree on how much sex is outside the normal range, then perhaps the question of if sex addiction exists will never be answered. It may be up to the individual to decide for themselves what their experience has been.
The Today Show ran a similar story on Wednesday morning and spoke to a recovering sex addict. Author of America Anonymous, a recovering sex addict and a New York Times contributor Beniot Denizet-Lewis has stayed at the well respected Pine Grove sex rehab center in Mississippi, and said that his sources have confirmed that Woods checked himself in last week. He said that recovery is a lifelong process. The process of recovery takes 4-6 weeks. He said that most people who attend a sex rehab do not go there because they are looking for a cover, but they are trying to get some control over their lives. Tiger Woods has had three knee surgeries in Park City, Utah and the last one on April 15, 2008, after which he took an extended period of time off from playing golf. He was determined to play in the US Open and win...which he did on June 14, 2008, much to everyone's amazement less than two months after his knee surgery. He was in pain during the US Open, as shown in this Associated Press photo. After the US Open, Tiger Woods took additional time off to let his knee heal. When this story first broke I was really loathe to think that the ongoing slurs had racial undertones now I'm seriously beginning to believe that perhaps there is when you consider that Charlie Sheen's domestic violence incident that reportedly involved a knife has all but disappeared from the tabloid headlines! It really appears as though the tabloids will not be satisfied until this family disintegrates or something worse happens to either TW or his family members.
I can not believe we are actually having a public debate about whether Tiger Woods and other sexual addicts like him are 'sick' puppies or simply voraciously lustful sinners! Since when does addictive behavior of any kind exempt one from an ethical judgment? We don’t wring our collective hands over whether a pedophile is guilty of sin! Whether someone is also ’sick’ or not may provide fodder for the gossip addicts, it has no real bearing on whether they are in fact a sinner.
The fact that we are even having this debate is defacto proof that we desperately need a non-theistic ethical standard to judge behavioral norms.
