Last Monday, TV Guide spoke to Angelica McDaniel, the senior vice president for daytime programming at CBS to get her thoughts on why the soaps are gaining big audiences once again with the viewers at home. Angelica commented that, “Soaps are bigger than game shows or talk shows in daytime.” She went on to say, “For about a decade, daytime television was losing about a tenth of a ratings point every year, and it was accepted thinking that you couldn’t fight it. Then I said, ‘We’re not going to accept this fate.’”
Well it seems like she and all of the CBS soap fans were right on because:
The Young and the Restless, for November 2013 brought in: 4.8 million total viewers, 1.9 Women 25-54, 1.3 Women-18-49 , 0.7 Women-18-34. Those are increased from the previous year of +10% nc, +8% ,+40%!
The Bold and the Beautiful, for November 2013 brought in: 3.7 million total viewers, 1.5 Women 25-54, 1.0 Women 18-49, 0.6 Women 18-34, Those are increased from the previous year of: +16% ,+7% nc ,+20%
How is that for the genre that was supposedly dead not too long ago? Y&R remains #1 and B&B #2 and the other CBS daytime shows are right up there also.
CBS is riding high with some of the best programming for daytime and prime time. Keep up the good work CBS. Now don’t you wish you hd stuck with Guiding Light and As The World Turns? We sure do!
