The film rights to Stephen King’s Under the Dome – the author’s 2009 novel about a Maine town sealed off from the rest of the world by a mysterious force field – were originally purchased by Steven Spielberg to be produced as a limited-run series for Showtime. When those efforts stalled, Showtime’s parent company, CBS, picked up the reins and greenlit a 13-episode run.
Television and comic book writer Brian K. Vaughn (handpicked by Spielberg to adapt the novel) is developing the series, with Stephen King himself as one of the executive producers. Niels Arden Oplev (the original Swedish adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) is directing the first episode.
Whether or not the series will be wrapped up in 13 episodes is solely dependent on ratings, and – as King has offered his blessing on any changes which might need to be made to extend the series – all bets are off as to where the story could go. CBS will premiere Under the Dome on Monday, June 24, 2013.
CBS recently put out a short BEHIND THE SCENES video promo which offers us the best look at this series so far … it's looking better all the time. Check it out.
Here’s hoping the series is as good as the book.
