“Art in the Blood” opened with Sherlock going to the NYPD for help when Watson calls him to say she is okay. Sherlock goes back to his home. Watson is tired & upset who doesn't want to hear Mycroft's explanation again. She goes to bed. Mycroft proceeds to tell Sherlock that he is part of the British intelligence.
It turns out that Mycroft has been part of the MI-6 organization for 10 years. Sherlock doesn't believe that his brother kept that secret from him. MI-6 didn't want Sherlock to interfere with what was going on with Mycroft's restaurant & that crime syndicate. That's why Watson was kidnapped because Sherlock saw a mysterious male in his brother's restaurant.
Sherlock goes to see Myrcoft's British MI-6 “handler” in New York. That “handler” tells Sherlock that a Frenchman named “De Soto” tried to get away with a stolen list of Swiss banks accounts. His group of men were going to kill Mycroft & Watson before MI-6 intervened. Mycroft's “handler” wants Sherlock to find out what happened to a man named Arthur West who was murdered. In exchange for saving Watson's life. West was an MI-6 source & Mycroft doesn't like his “handler” asking Sherlock to help British intelligence.
West's murder is now in the hands of the NYPD. The “handler” wants Sherlock to take a look at West's case file. Sherlock accepts so MI-6 & Mycroft will be out of their lives for good. Him & Watson go to the morgue to find out what actually killed Arthur West.
